A Simple Way To Improve Patience By Learning To Fly An RC Helicopter

Patience with helicopter

Patience was something that I struggled with for a while when I was younger. Getting frustrated with people or myself was so common. It was because I wanted things to happen right now at that exact moment. Life really doesn’t work that way, a lot of times the good things happen at a really slow pace.

One Christmas my wife bought a mini-RC helicopter. I hadn’t really owned many helicopters so my flying skills weren’t good. I didn’t know that helicopter would teach me everything I needed to know about patience.

We all need to have some type of patience because it allows us to treat ourselves and other people with respect. When you get mad at people easily that’s a sign you are lacking this one attribute. I believe we start to learn or don’t learn this as young kids. If you threw a tantrum whenever you didn’t get your way and received what you wanted it kept you from learning this skill.

An RC helicopter pushes against everything that you know. Believing that you will take this toy out of the box and instantly know how to fly it isn’t true. There will be multiple attempts with multiple crashes. At this point you have a choice to give up and walk away or continue to be consistent and learn. This is when you will determine how much patience you actually have.

It’s possible to go all the way up to adulthood and not have patience. Why is this such a big deal? It can ruin your marriage because you could be mean to your spouse. It can make you angry towards your kids and make them frustrated with you. A very common situation is that you lose your jobs because your lack of patience makes you a really sucky coworker.
