Toys help us escape things and give us focus

Why do I enjoy collecting and playing with toys? As a kid, I remember they helped me to dream and escape hard times.

My grandmother bought my first remote control Corvette. It was yellow, had lights and it could only go forward and reverse. That set the desire for me to achieve owning a car like that one day, I didn’t even know what kind of car it was. I was in elementary school when she gave it to me for Christmas.

Train sets were something that I got every year during Christmas. I wasn’t a huge fan of trains but always took the time to play with them. I noticed much of my time was taking them apart to see how they worked. I would spend many hours in my room trying to understand how electricity was supplied to the track or how the train’s little wheels sat on the track and got a grip. To this day I still don’t understand any of that but still think they are cool.

It’s so strange to think as we become adults we look down on playing with toys. Like there’s something wrong with playing or collecting them. I truly find joy in all types of toys because they seem to teach me something.

Whenever I’m stressed I’ll spend five or ten minutes either looking at or playing with one. It’s a mixture of what I may play with. From slot car tracks, train sets, Playstation, or Xbox it just depends on what I’m in the mood for.
